EU Referendum

A petition, run by the Daily Telegraph, has attracted 50,000 signatures calling for a referendum on the EU constitutional Treaty. The government will undoubtedly ignore it.

This is actually a battle by proxy. Important though it may be that we have the promised referendum - because it was promised in Labour's election manifesto - this is not really the issue.

The people of Britain want a referendum on our membership of the EU, period. It is deeply unpopular. The political and media establishments are, on the whole, determined to prevent this from happening, for the same reason - they know the EU is deeply unpopular.

And so this strange battle continues, wherein the great and the good conspire to end European democracy and self-determination, and the people try to express their disapproval.
