Bicycle power

An interesting insight into the world wished for by environmentalists (who put the "mental" in environmental?) can be gleaned from the website of the wonderfully funny E-Day project:

E-Day's activities will include the following:

(1) St Paul's Cathedral launch (5:00pm - 7:00pm, Wed 27 February)

A launch event at St Paul's Cathedral will feature:

(a) The Cathedral's illuminations being left off

(b) A candle lit vigil

(c) A bicycle-powered cinema

(d) Fun and factual films

(e) Games

(f) A bicycle clinic

(g) A welcoming address by the Bishop of London

(h) An expression of thanks from Matt

The launch event will start at 5pm and finish at 7:00pm on Wednesday 27 Feb.
A bicycle-powered cinema. Picture it.

I went to see a bicycle-powered son-et-lumiere show in Glasgow last year (iirc it was part of Celtic Connections, but for the life of me I can't imagine why).

It was entirely obvious to anyone with the slightest scientific knowledge (ie me and perhaps two other people in the crowd of 250 or so) that the bicycles were doing absolutely nothing at all. They were just up on stands being pedalled. Meanwhile on the stage maybe 20Kw of lighting was coming and going at various points, regardless of the effort or speed of the cyclists.

In other words the whole thing was a complete sham, even if rather fetching and nice to look at.

Pretty much like windfarms really.
