Happy pie makers

A flash of honesty, followed by bogus concern for others, from Melton Mowbray (emphasis added):

The Melton Mowbray pork pie has finally joined Cornish clotted cream, Whitstable oysters and Welsh lamb on Europe’s list of protected food.
[...]
Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman and local councillor, said: “The award of [protection] for Melton Mowbray pork pies safeguards our regional food heritage, protects our local jobs and gives the consumer value.”
Protectionism, yes. But not on behalf of the consumer.
