Fitna - the movie

Available at last, after even Network Solutions pulled the plug on the website. After all the censorship, it's a duty to show this - and you have a right to see it. That's even more important since there's a Dutch campaign to stop you seeing it by making and uploading as many videos as possible with the same title, most of which have people saying "Sorry". I looked at the organisers' website, which I won't link to. Wittily, they say they value "freedom of expression".

They obviously don't value freedom from genital mutilation. Nor do they seem to value freedom from rape within forced marriages, rape of under-aged girls, or freedom of conscience. And they don't seem to see any value in opposition to fascist movements.

WARNING: Very graphic images. Very disturbing.

The film was a lot better than I thought it would be.

As "Tony" quite rightly pointed out over on the CaFE forum:

"There was no emotive language, other than by muslims advocating murder and hate. There were no prejudicial 'spinnings'. It is very hard to see how muslims can refute the content of the film when it is, largely, muslims that ARE the content of the film..."

For what it's worth an opinion poll (1,069 interviewees) published this week revealed that 56% call islam a threat to Dutch identity and 57% think that allowing in large groups of immigrants has been the biggest mistake in Dutch history.

Wilders timed the release to appear just one hour before the pbs evening news (NOS) went on air, so the journos were desperately ill-prepared. The results were either hilarious or buttock-clenching depending on your point of view.

There is a dark horse however. This week Ehsan Jami announced the imminent release (20th April) of his film, critical of islam, on a Dutch current affairs programme. So there is still a long way to go yet.
