It's odd nowadays that I can sit and read accounts of sheer insanity like this without feeling any emotion whatsoever, merely a vague sense of inevitability.
Long, long ago, it was my experience that neither professional engineers nor plant operators were allowed to touch a tool on chemical plant: that was strictly a job for tradesmen. Until night shift, when anyone could wield a spanner or pliers. Pre-Thatcher, mind.
